Actually the confusion some are facing is the value provided is not average so there is no need for multiplying 8083 - 9 again divide by 3.
The answer is simple they given 80 in total and asked for deducting 9 from 80 as 3 people * 3 years each = 9.
80-9 = 71.

80-(3+3+3) = 80-9 = 71.
TOTAL AGES OF 3 NOS = 80.
THEIR AGES 3 YEARS AGO = 9.
TOTAL AGES OF 3 NOS = 80.
THEIR AGES 3 YEARS AGO = 9.

Suppose Amar is 25, Akbar 35 and Anthony 20 years old, total comes to 25+35+20 = 80.
Now 3 years before their age would be 25-3, 35-3 and 20-3 i.e. 22+32+17 = 71 years.

Avg is 80 so total is 240 only.
Before 3 years total is 231.
So avg will be 231/3.
Before 3 years total is 231.
So avg will be 231/3.

Simply I understand this problem :
Total 80 before three years their ages.
80-3-3-3 = 71.
Ans is 71.
