Here routes should we multiplied.
Here point A to B lets assume 4 routes a1, a2, a3, a4 then from point B to C, 3 routes b1, b2 and b3 and from points C to D, 2 routes c1 and c2.
There will be total 24 routes as 4 * 3 * 2 = 24. Let's see in explanation numbers of routes.

2. a1b1c2.
3. a1b2c1.
4. a1b2c2.
5. a1b3c1.
6. a1b3c2.
Same Six ways for a2, a3 and a4. So, totally 24 ways.

I think 12 is the right answer 4 + 3 + 2 + 3 (the main routes) = 12.
* If we will take into consideration that each route has 2 ways so the answer will be 24.
