@Shivajyothi.

You gave one eg right but that is not the correct framing of no sooner.

No sooner had they arrived than they were arguing.

Why did we use "no sooner did I open the door".

Is this correct "no sooner I opened the door".

Plzzzz explain! I am confused.

Madhu said:   1 decade ago
No sooner means the sentence actually means when he opened the door suddenly or in some quick session after he opened the door.

I think it should be 'Then' instead of 'Than', because 'than' is making the whole sentence weird. 'than' we use for comparison.

"no sooner I opened the door" is also correct but I couldn't understand the whole sentence itself. But you are right purnima!

No sooner when I opened the door the rain, heavy and stormy, rushed in making us shiver from head to foot. Is this Correct ?

The statement is a past tense, i.e. Rushed in. Then open must be replaced with opened. So the answer should be option A.

There are many such words. For eg.:

Not only.... but also
Scarcely.....when
Both ..... and
Hardly ..... when. etc.

No sooner + inverted past perfect ... than + past tense

No sooner HAD I said it than I realised how stupid it was.
