'since' is used for particular date of time such as since 2015 since january, but 'for' is used for a period such as 12 year, 3 days.

Since is used instead of for as it is last twelve years. For is used before indefinite time like 'twelve years'.

Word 'last ' followed by the since and it is treated as definite time.
