The correct form is not "whole heartedly" either, it's "wholeheartedly in one word".

The Stronger is ok because The Team is not compared with other team and not with many teams. The Sentence emphasis more on Defeat than Comparison of teams.

It should be the strongest in superlative comparison.

How "the stronger" is not an error. That article "the" should be placed in front of superlative degree. Strongest.

The word 'The' is a superlative degree, therefore I feel it should be strongest and it should also be whole heartedly.
