"Block" of Residential flats "is" coming up near our house.

Jit Saha said: (Mar 7, 2011)
A is correct since here there is not only one block but thre are many blocks.

Aaa said: (Apr 4, 2011)
I too agree with sai.

Vertika said: (Aug 1, 2011)
"..are coming up..." its plural. so, "blocks" is correct. not "block".

@Sai
if you right "is" then it should be "A block...".
ok....

Kamran said: (Aug 13, 2011)
Blocks is correct because in flats there are many blocks.

Paramjeet Kaur said: (Sep 6, 2011)
block of residential flat is coming up is also correct

Vikas said: (Sep 10, 2011)
No paramjeet, with "block" you need to precede it with "A" i.e. "A block".

Lakshmi said: (Sep 19, 2011)
I too agree with statement that blocks plural.

Soniya said: (Sep 28, 2011)

Vertika is rite!

Priyanka said: (Oct 12, 2011)
Block of Residential flats is coming up and Blocks of Residential flats are coming up both are correct. So,option A) or B) both are correct.

Albert said: (Oct 27, 2011)
Priyanka we should say "A block of residential flats is coming up" not block of residential flats is coming up.

Dinesh said: (Jan 17, 2012)
Rather than near our house we must use near our houses!

So the answer A & B both.

Naveen said: (Apr 12, 2012)
See its not about plural. 'Block' is a collection of flats, i.e, a block of flats (similar to flock in case of sheep) , Hence

Block of residential flats, is coming up near our house is correct. Though we can buy Vertika's take, but that depends on which noun she emphasizes - generally collective noun plays a bigger part in selecting the helping verb.

Divya said: (May 23, 2012)
A block of residential flats is coming up near our house(singular) is correct or Blocks of residential flats are coming up near our house is correct(plural)..so option a is right..

Niraj said: (Aug 1, 2012)
For the plural "flats" is there so A block of residential is correct.

Sunny said: (Aug 23, 2012)
Vertika is right

Wangthoi said: (Oct 8, 2012)
Vertika is rite: if we are to use singular verb 'is', 'A block' is rite. But the plural 'are' is used in the sentence so it should be 'Blocks'.

Nitin said: (Jan 13, 2013)
Block of residential flats is coming up near our house is also correct.

I don't think it can be "Block of residential flats is coming up near our house".

It should be "'A' block of residential flats 'are' coming up near our house."

Rahul said: (Aug 21, 2013)
"A block of Residential flats" is also correct as there can be many flats in a block.

Dinesh Kumar Sharma said: (Dec 12, 2013)
In the first sentence we used block of residential flats. So subject is singular (block) because of that verb in the second sentence should be singular.

Block of the residential flats is.

Anu said: (Feb 4, 2014)
Here block is singular i.e., subject so that should be 'is coming up' is correct.

Shanu said: (Sep 5, 2014)
Why don't near our house is wrong? it should "houses". !

Manoj said: (Sep 6, 2014)
A "block of residential flats is coming up near our house" may be correct.

Manoj said: (Oct 10, 2014)
If we are using block then A should be used otherwise it will be blocks because apartments has number of blocks or flats so blocks should be used.

Arun said: (Dec 1, 2014)
Which one is right? Blocks OR is.

D Jro said: (Mar 24, 2015)
Yes number of blocks are flats.

Pankaj Jangra said: (May 21, 2015)
In my opinion block is considered to be singular, so according to noun of noun construction we should use verb according to first subject that is - A block of residential flats is coming up near our house.

Rakesh said: (May 28, 2015)
Block of Residential flat is coming up near our house. This is more preferable because you should do the last correction.

Neeru said: (Jun 29, 2015)
Block of Residential flats is coming up near our house should be the correct one according to subject verb agreement.

Himani Arora said: (Jun 30, 2015)
I think instead of are we have to use is because block is singular and with singular we use singular form of verb.

Rohit said: (Sep 2, 2015)
"Block" is correct only block is wrong.

Vimal Panchal said: (Sep 30, 2015)
Here subject is block that's why we are using are in 2nd statement.

Aru said: (Jun 29, 2016)
Why we do not use " from" i.e., near from our house.

Avneesh Kumar said: (Aug 30, 2016)
I agree with @Rohit.

Akshay Jain said: (Oct 16, 2016)
Why-"are coming up", Is there any problem with "build up"?

There should be "blocks not block".

Shantanu said: (Feb 17, 2019)
Here, We cannot change the subject. The verb has to be changed.

Meghna said: (Jul 4, 2019)
Why not "Block of residential flats is coming"?

Tshultrim said: (Sep 9, 2020)
The only correct answer is Option A, because A. 'Block of residential flats' can be changed to 'Blocks of residential flats'.

Making the statement correct by changing Option B 'are coming up' to 'is coming up' requires a change in Option A again. For that, it would have to begin with "A block of residential flats" "is coming up".

We do not say "Block of residential flats", but "Blocks of residential flats" is used.

Adekun said: (Feb 18, 2021)
Correct forms:

1. A block of residential flats is coming up near our house.

2. Blocks of residential flats are coming up near our house.

Pavan said: (Apr 18, 2021)
'Are' is used for plural words. As it is mentioned that there are so many flats.

So 'Are' is the correct answer.
