These tests generally fall under the IMViC series of tests used to differentiate the bacteria.
Indole - checks for the conversion of trp to indole.
Methyl red test - the glucose is generally fermented to the lactic acid, acetic acid, and formic acid. Due to the formation of these acids, the ph of medium falls below 4.5.
Citrate - tests whether bacteria can use citrate as a sole source of carbon and energy.
VP test - detects the formation of acetoin as a positive result.
