Tensile stress will be induced if and only if both the two ends are fixed. If ends are not fixed no stress will be induced. So Whenever a body is heated it expands and when allowed to cool it normally contracts. Its the natural behavior of material so compression stress is the right answer.

It is not constrained or fixed so no resistance so stress.

Tensile stress are developed.

As the metal froze to -5 ° It will start to shrink. As it start to shrink the length of the metal start to increase if and only if it is free from external forces (restricted forces). Due to increase in length it is said be acted upon by tensile force.

When the bar is cooled then it is want to contract but the support tends to tensile load so the stress is induced in the bar is tensile.

Correct answers is no stress, when two bar fixed at both end during heating tensile, during cooling compression will occur.

Here, the correct answer is no stress.

The basic definition of stress in a component is, resistance offered by unit resisting area.

So, if no constraints, then there is no resistance, so no stress.

If the bar is not fixed, no stress but if it fixed then tensile stress. Data inadequate. !

We can say that when a bar is free to expand no stresses are inducing in it. Then when it is cooled freely why tensile stress is to be considered? Please Suggest me.
