Ya in view compressive stress is correct if you place bread in freezer in -5 temp it will shrink same when you place a iron bar in freeze the molecules in the iron will able expand it will undergo shrinkage.

When a bar is cooled to -5 temp it must goes to compressive stress. Whenever a body is cooled its undergoes shrinkage. So compressive stresses are developed.

The tensile stress answer may be correct when bar is fixed at both end otherwise no stress will developed in bar.
