Compressive stress is right answer because bar is cooled.

Tensile stress will develop only if both the ends of a bar is fixed. Otherwise on free contraction and expansion, no stress will develop.

When the bar is cooled, it will contract. This contraction is prevented by the fixed ends which develops tensile stress in the bar. If it is free to contract, then there is no stress developed.

When, there is sudden cooling, the inter-molecular forces binding itself very tightly packed, which leads to compression.

Hence the right answer is Compressive stress.

Compressive stress is the right answer because it is cooling.

Whenever a body is heated it expands and when allowed to cool it normally contracts. Its the natural behaviour of material. Hence compressive stress is the right answer.

A bar is compressive when cooling because when cooling it is contrasting and as we know compression forces are forces that act inwardly in a body while expansion is tensile force because it is elongating the bar that is, the forces acting away from the bar.

No stress will induce, because no restriction in contracting the bar.

Stress = internal resistance therefore when the bar is cooled it just shrinks, there is no internal resistance offered by the body until and unless the bar is constrained to shrink by holding it at both ends. Hence answer should be no stress.

Stress will not depend on the temperature. So no stress.
