Ya in view compressive stress is correct if you place bread in freezer in -5 temp it will shrink same when you place a iron bar in freeze the molecules in the iron will able expand it will undergo shrinkage.

When a body is cooled at -5c create the compressive load its solidly correct.

VIPIN said:   1 decade ago
If the load is compressive the stress is also produced is compressive stress.

When the temp decreases, the material is prevented from contracting. Therefore tensile stresses are induced.

The question does NOT ask which stress is being applied. Its asking what stresses will the bar develope !

@Taniya, then compressive stress should be developed in bar undergoing free expansion due to heating?

Nishanth Kallada said:   1 decade ago
Data in question is not sufficient, if there has no restriction for contract then there will no stress will develop.

Tensile stress will be induced if and only if both the two ends are fixed. If ends are not fixed no stress will be induced. Here nothing is mentioned as such.

@Mahendra got the point. If the bar fixed at the both end, if it cooled to temperature -5 then it is shrink, when shrink it pushes from the two ends.

No shear stress will be developed.

As on applying heat there is no stress will induced likewise on cooling too no stress is developed. Because until we apply any external forces on bar there is no tensile, compressive or shear stresses induced.
