Brittle materials like cast iron gives no continuous chips because cast iron contain carbon as flakes of graphite.

Cast iron is a brittle materials so it is machining process smalls piece material produce or discontinuous chips form.

Segmental chips are produced with brittle materials like cast iron but continuous chip can be produced with brittle material if the cutting speed is high.

Segment chip are formed during machining of hard and brittle like cast iron.

Segmental means discontinuous either of regular shape or irregular shape. If irregular shape then sure brittle material. If regular shape-then ductile material on multipoint cutter.

What about high speed steel and high speed carbon? They are not hard and brittle.

Material which is having lower thermal conductivity in nature will produce segmented chips.

Ex: Cast iron, Wood.

What means Segmental?

Discontinuous chips are also known as segmented chips. It happens in the case of brittle material like cast iron etc.
