The term coupling meant its used to join two mating profiles without fasteners. Zero fit locking principle. It should not be a solid shaft.

All couplings are always hallow but shaft for sleeve and muff coupling is always solid because if shaft is hollow then how do we apply key on the shaft?
For hollow shaft we always use flange coupling.

From my point of view, hollow cylinder objects can handle large stress as well as forces, which are acting on it.
So that muff coupling is made up of hollow cylinder ?
