Very high pressure is created in the clearance volume to burn fuel itself. Fuel is hard compressed, hence it is compression ignition system.

Because in diesel engine spark is not produced that's why it is not a spark ignition engine.

In the diesel engine, the charge air is compressed till it reaches to the self burning temp. Of the diesel fuel after this the fuel is introduce in the cylinder through nozzles.

The compression ration for diesel fuel is quite less as compared to petrol engine and gets burnt without spark merely by compression so are called compression engines.

In diesel engines we did not use spark, the air is compressed with high C.R AROUND 16-20, it is higher than s.i engines.

Diesel has cetane number those fuels have cetane number, very high compressed need to burn the fuels so diesel engines are C.I engines.
