In diesel engines, fuel is atomized and mixed with air inside the cylinder through fuel injectors, and ignition takes place only by the compression of the air-fuel mixture in the compression stroke. Whereas in petrol engine (spark ignition engines), ignition takes place by spark plugs. So in diesel engines, Due to compression high pressure and temperature increases and the mixture ignites for the power stroke. Hence diesel engines are also known as compression engines.

Diesel fuel cannot be ignited through spark as done in petrol engines.

So its is first intake to combustion chamber is air and then its compressed then at end of compression stroke diesel fuel at high pressure ratio its injected in to the combustion chamber in sprinkled form thus fuel gets ignited.

In diesel engines the fuel get burnt itself when the atomizer spray it, this is due to the air is too much compressed, as the atomizer introduces fuel in the cylinder it immediately catches fire and creates power stoke of the cycle, hence it's CI engine.

The compression ratio of diesel is very high between 12-22.
That's why it burn in very less compression so it doesn't needs spark plug.

Fuel burns only by heat created during compression.
That's why it is known as compression ignition engine.

Diesel engine uses the heat of compressed air to initiate ignition and burn the fuel that has been injected into the combustion chamber. So the ignition takes place due to the compression process of air.

Because CIengine is a constant presser engine and in which air compressed at high pressure and temperature and the fuel is injected inside the cylinder and fuel is burned. So it said to be C.I. engine.

In the compression ignition engine air-fuel mixture is not pass together in engine, In engine comes under mixture and its cycle is also changes for constant pressure that's way it is CI engine.

Diesel engines have a fuel injecter will be. The compression ratio of diesel engines is 15:1 to 22:1. It has high pressure. At end of compression stroke, the fuel may be injected.

In the diesel engine, the charge air is compressed till it reaches to the self burning temp. Of the diesel fuel after this the fuel is introduce in the cylinder through nozzles.

Diesel engines are called an compression ignition engine because in this power is developed by compression stroke with high pressure so I is called an compression ignition.
