# Logical Reasoning - Statement and Conclusion - Discussion

### Discussion :: Statement and Conclusion - Section 1 (Q.No.5)

In each question below is given a statement followed by two conclusions numbered I and II. You have to assume everything in the statement to be true, then consider the two conclusions together and decide which of them logically follows beyond a reasonable doubt from the information given in the statement.

• (A) If only conclusion I follows
• (B) If only conclusion II follows
• (C) If either I or II follows
• (D) If neither I nor II follows and
• (E) If both I and II follow.

5.

Statements: Prime age school-going children in urban India have now become avid as well as more regular viewers of television, even in households without a TV. As a result there has been an alarming decline in the extent of readership of newspapers.

Conclusions:

1. Method of increasing the readership of newspapers should be devised.
2. A team of experts should be sent to other countries to study the impact of TV. on the readership of newspapers.

[A]. Only conclusion I follows [B]. Only conclusion II follows [C]. Either I or II follows [D]. Neither I nor II follows [E]. Both I and II follow

Explanation:

The statement concentrates on the increasing viewership of TV. and does not stress either on increasing the readership of newspapers or making studies regarding the same. So, neither I nor II follows.

Adit said: (Dec 2, 2010) If there is a decline in something, should not efforts be made to improve the situation?

Ankit Kumar said: (Jun 30, 2011) In the statement its clearly mentioned "there has been an alarming decline in the extent of readership of newspapers". Even then the explanation given says stress is on tv viewership & not on newspapers.

Vamsi said: (Oct 17, 2011) In the last sentence used a word "as a result" then how come first statement can not follow. Could any one please explain.?

Rameshwar said: (Feb 15, 2012) Conclusion should not consist the part of statement.

Archu said: (Mar 7, 2012) I think we should not predict the output in-order just to find whether the conclusion given by them satisfies the statement and not that we should decide the result. If so then it is correct that both does not follow. They give only suggestions and not the conclusion.

Bhoomika said: (Mar 6, 2013) In my opinion the answer should be 'a' as the last line of the passage clearly gives stress on the decline in the newspaper readership. Words like 'as a result' & 'alarming decline' make it ('a') an obvious choice.

Fayaz Samo said: (Sep 19, 2013) No there is no relevant connection between two arguments, so neither one nor two follows it.

Kuru Chada said: (Oct 9, 2013) Yes it is very much difficult to discuss on this, every different person may deduce their own views.

Neha said: (Jun 18, 2014) I think the answer should have been "A". AS A RESULT and ALARMING DECLINE indicate that instead of the increasing viewership of TV the writer is more concerned with the result decline in newspaper readership, which he/she finds ALARMING. The writer has not linked the increase of TV viewership with health or something related but only the decline in newspaper readership. So, drawing a conclusion should also lay stress on readership. If one is alarmed by something, one has to take steps to invert the act, in case to increase the declining readership.

Sandeep Ramanna said: (Aug 7, 2014) A/c to the statement both 1 and 2 conclusion are valid as it speaks both about the impact of the TV and as a result there is a decline in the readership of newspaper. So, I guess correct answer is E.

Payal Jain said: (May 17, 2015) In the last line of statement it is saying that decline in extent in readership of newspaper. So 1st should be the conclusion. Please explain it why one is not the answer ?

Pulkit Sharma said: (Oct 15, 2015) Initially I also thought that "A" should be the answer. But the given statements if thoroughly examined don't give any implication about the hazards of watching TV or the benefits of reading news paper. So, I think this should be taken simply as a statement and not as a problem that needs to be tackled. So, "none of the conclusions follows".

ANU BABU said: (Mar 7, 2017) Here I have got a doubt about choice A because it has mentioned in the statement about the decline in the readership of the newspaper. Please explain about it.

Yashasvi Singhal said: (Jul 26, 2017) Clearly A because the second statement does state how watching of TV has led to reduced readership of newspapers.

Twikle J said: (Jun 23, 2018) Clearly, A should be the correct answer as words like 'alarming decline' and 'as a result' as been used. Also, the decline in newspaper readers has been clearly mentioned so it should he some context. Kindly correct me if I am wrong.

Ashwin V Naik said: (Jul 23, 2021) In my view. Statement gives a strong statement that there a decline in the Newspaper but it has no supporting statement indicating that it is a matter of concern. So marking op would be an assumption. So the correct answer is 'D'. Hope this helps.
