Directions to Solve

In each question below is given a statement followed by two assumptions numbered I and II. You have to consider the statement and the following assumptions and decide which of the assumptions is implicit in the statement.

Give answer

  • (A) If only assumption I is implicit
  • (B) If only assumption II is implicit
  • (C) If either I or II is implicit
  • (D) If neither I nor II is implicit
  • (E) If both I and II are implicit.

20.

Statement: "To buy a X - T.V, contact Y - the sole agent of X-T.V." - An advertisement.

Assumptions:

  1. People generally prefer to buy T.V. through sole agent.
  2. The T.V. producing companies do not sell their products directly.

Only assumption I is implicit
Only assumption II is implicit
Either I or II is implicit
Neither I nor II is implicit
Both I and II are implicit
Answer: Option
Explanation:
The advertisement persuades the people to meet the sole agent Y to buy X-T. V. This does not mean that the people prefer to buy TV. through the sole agent or that the TV. companies only sell their products through the sole agents. So, both I and II are not implicit.

I. People generally prefer to buy T.V through a sole agent.

Invalid. The advertisement is telling people who to contact, but it doesn't imply that people have a pre-existing preference for sole agents. The ad's purpose is to inform the consumer of the channel, not to capitalise on a psychological preference for "sole agency" itself.

II. The T.V. producing companies do not sell their products directly.

Valid. The statement explicitly directs buyers to "Y," who is described as the sole agent. If company "X" sold the TVs directly to consumers, Y would not be the sole agent. The advertisement implies that if you want this specific TV, Y is the only authorised gateway to get it.

I think option B) Only assumption 2 is implicit.

Since they are selling through an agent only. It means they selling directly to the customer. So, Statement II is correct.

"SOLE AGENT" is the highlight of the advertisement.

So 1 is implicit whereas 2 is not.

As per solution 2nd statement should be true, because company sell X-T.V through SOLE dealer only, so there is no chance that same tv is available at other sellers, so statement 2 is correct.

The statement is made with assumptions that and fact that company X does not sell its product directly to the public. Hence the advertisement for the sole agent. If he is not the only seller then why would he advertise for the X brand of the television.

Hence assumption II is right.

In a statement, there is a word used "sole". So 1st one is implicit. People may prefer sole agent in many things that don't mean we can't use it for TV.
