Directions to Solve

In each question below is given a statement followed by two assumptions numbered I and II. You have to consider the statement and the following assumptions and decide which of the assumptions is implicit in the statement.

Give answer

  • (A) If only assumption I is implicit
  • (B) If only assumption II is implicit
  • (C) If either I or II is implicit
  • (D) If neither I nor II is implicit
  • (E) If both I and II are implicit.

Statement: Among all the articles, the prices of personal computers show the highest decline from June 2005 to December 2005.

Assumptions:

  1. Comparative prices of all the articles in June and December 2005 were available.
  2. Prices of personal computers were higher in the first six months than the last six months of 2005.

Only assumption I is implicit
Only assumption II is implicit
Either I or II is implicit
Neither I nor II is implicit
Both I and II are implicit
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Since prices of personal computers show the highest decline among all the articles, it implies that the comparative prices of all the articles was known. So, I is implicit. Also, it being given that prices of computers showed decline during the last six months, it means that they were higher in the first six months. So, II is implicit.

Statement says "among all the articles", this means the prices of personal computers have been compared with other articles, that implies the data for other articles were available. So first assumption implies.

But then it says the prices of PCs have shown highest decline among other articles. This can also mean that prices of PCs were still falling in first 6 months but not at the highest rate as compared to others. So 2nd assumption in my opinion is invalid.

The statement doesn't say anything about the first 6 months. It can be that the price was very less in January, increased till June and then declined till December. There is no clarity about the first 6 months. So assumption 2 doesn't hold.

For me, both the statements are inferences and not assumptions.

So, the answer is option D.

Assumption 1 June and December is wrong.

It should be June to December.

But the assumption 1 doesn't tell anything about personal computers.
