A four-person crew from Classic Colors is painting Mr. Field's house. Michael is painting the front of the house. Ross is in the alley behind the house painting the back. Jed is painting the window frames on the north side, Shawn is on the south. If Michael switches places with Jed, and Jed then switches places with Shawn, where is Shawn?

After all the switches were made, Shawn is in front of the house. Ross is in the alley behind the house,Michael is on the north side, and Jed is on the south.

The answer cannot be found out because we cannot determine which direction is the front/back of the house.
Since Jed is in the north and Shawn is in the south, either west or east can be the front/back side of the house. After we perform all the switches Shawn can be either in front/back or east/west.
Either east or west can be front/back because north is not the front/back of the house( hence its the sidewards) . South, which is opposite to north also cannot be the front/back for obvious reasons. Therefore the ambiguity.
