Its Max because Max comes behind Ruby and Ruby and James goes alongside of the dog and Rachel is behind Max.

Max comes in between Ruby and Rachel.

The passage didn't say that Max was "directly" behind Ruby. Therefore it is unclear that Max was in front of Rachel.

James {Right}.

Rachel - ({max}center) --dog >.

Ruby{Left}.

In the question it is mentioned that max goes behind ruby. But it isn't clear that he was behind Rachel or front of her. So the answer could be either max/Rachel.

Initially james was directly behind the dog.

Dog.
James.

Then ruby came behind james and rachel behind ruby.

Dog.
James.
Ruby.
Rachel.

Max came from the opposite direction and joined the pursuit behind ruby.

Dog.
James.
Ruby.
Max.
Rachel.

Now james goes to the left and ruby goes to the right alongside the dog respectively.

James dog ruby.
Max.
Rachel.

So whose directly behind the dog now?

MAX.
