Logical Reasoning - Logical Problems - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Logical Problems - Type 4 (Q.No. 10)
Directions to Solve
The logic problems in this set present you with three true statements: Fact 1, Fact 2, and Fact 3. Then, you are given three more statements (labeled I, II, and III), and you must determine which of these, if any, is also a fact. One or two of the statements could be true; all of the statements could be true; or none of the statements could be true. Choose your answer based solely on the information given in the first three facts.

10.
Fact 1: Some pens don't write.
Fact 2: All blue pens write.
Fact 3: Some writing utensils are pens.
If the first three statements are facts, which of the following statements must also be a fact?
I: Some writing utensils don't write.
II: Some writing utensils are blue.
III: Some blue writing utensils don't write.
I only
I and II only
II and III only
None of the statements is a known fact.
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Since some pens don't write, some writing utensils don't write (statement I). Since there are blue pens and since pens are writing utensils, some writing utensils are blue (statement II). There is not enough information to support statement III.

Not able to understand this.

I believe that the correct answer is in fact A. Fact two does not state anything about the existence of a blue pen and is in fact valid if there are no blue pens. Hence we cannot say that there are blue utensils.

Lee said:   1 decade ago
The correct answer would be D. As it has not mentioned that wirting utensils are pen and we cannot say whether it is a blue pens or the pens which don't write. Incase if it has used some pens which can write.

Priya said:   1 decade ago
The correct option is D as some writing utensils might be those pens which do not write. Also it is not given that all pens are blue.

Some writing utensils - which are pens.

Lies in three case.

Some are blue pen and some are other pans.

All are blue pen.

All are other pans.

So A and B combinedly can not be true.

Hold on Guys., Let me explain you clearly:

1. " A " is correct based upon the fact 1 & 3.

2. " B " is correct because some writing utensils are pens and certainly "blue" is the color of the pen that means definitely this one of this kind exists.

Some Writing utensils
/
(Pens)
/
(blue or any other color)

Means some writing utensils are blue (Only because of the mentioned fact 2).

Blue pens are within the set "pens" and all pens are within the set "writing utencils".

So A and B is Correct.

I think the correct answer is D.

As for I-some writing utensils are pens but we don't know it may write or not as some pens don't writ and some do. It can fall under any category. So this is not a fact that they don't write.

For II-SOME WRITING UTENSILS ARE PENS. THEY MAY OR MAY NOT BE BLUE SO WE CANT SAY ITS BLUE. SO II IS NOT A FACT.

FOR II-THERE IS NOTHING GIVEN ABOUT BLUE WRITING UTENSILS AND EVEN IF IS CONSIDERED A BLUE PEN THEN IT WILL WRITE. SO III IS FALSE.

I think option D is correct. Because it is not given that all writing utilities are pen.

Some writing utilities are pen. But which type of pen? They all can be blue. In case all writing utilities writes.

So option D is correct.
