Directions to Solve

In each question below are given two statements followed by two conclusions numbered I and II. You have to take the given two statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance from commonly known facts. Read the conclusion and then decide which of the given conclusions logically follows from the two given statements, disregarding commonly known facts.

• (A) If only conclusion I follows
• (B) If only conclusion II follows
• (C) If either I or II follows
• (D) If neither I nor II follows and
• (E) If both I and II follow.

3.

Statements: All mangoes are golden in colour. No golden-coloured things are cheap.

Conclusions:

1. All mangoes are cheap.
2. Golden-coloured mangoes are not cheap.
Only conclusion I follows
Only conclusion II follows
Either I or II follows
Neither I nor II follows
Both I and II follow
Explanation:
Clearly, the conclusion must be universal negative and should not contain the middle term. So, it follows that 'No mango is cheap'. Since all mangoes are golden in colour, we may substitute 'mangoes' with 'golden-coloured mangoes'. Thus, II follows.

We are no way concern about "Golden-coloured mangoes", because the term is not there in both the premises.

Since the 2nd premise is negative, how a conclusion can be formed ?

We may also say that,

According to rule - if any one statement is negative then both conclusion must be also be negative, But in this conclusion one are not negative.

So, only 2nd follows.

But in the second premise, only 'things' are said! No scene of mango in there! then why conclusion II?

We cannot substitute mangos instead of golden color.

The mango is a golden thing, and all golden things are expensive, so the mango would be expensive.

All gold colour things are not cheap that means they are expensive.

So only 2 follows.
