### Discussion :: Cause and Effect - Cause and Effect (Q.No.18)

In each of the following questions, two statements numbered I and II are given. There may be cause and effect relationship between the two statements. These two statements may be the effect of the same cause or independent causes. These statements may be independent causes without having any relationship. Read both the statements in each question and mark your answer as

• (A) If statement I is the cause and statement II is its effect;
• (B) If statement II is the cause and statement I is its effect;
• (C) If both the statements I and II are independent causes;
• (D) If both the statements I and II are effects of independent causes; and
• (E) If both the statements I and II are effects of some common cause.

18.

Statements:

1. Police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the unlawful gathering of large number of people.
2. The citizens' forum called a general strike in protest against the police atrocities.

 [A]. Statement I is the cause and statement II is its effect [B]. Statement II is the cause and statement I is its effect [C]. Both the statements I and II are independent causes [D]. Both the statements I and II are effects of independent causes [E]. Both the statements I and II are effects of some common cause

Explanation:

Clearly, the people's mass protest against the police might have instigated the latter to indulge in lathi-charge to disperse the mob.

 Naresh said: (Feb 6, 2012) Answer A. Explanation: As the police resorted to lathi caharge, in protest of this activity of the police the citizen's forum called a general strike.

 Nico Brubaker said: (Jul 27, 2016) I agree with you @Naresh, as the act of hitting people with long sticks and shoving them away with riot shields is definitely a police atrocity.

 Nick Dunkin said: (Sep 1, 2016) I disagree. Assuming that these two events are related (I don't think you can, but), how do you know which event came first? There is nothing to suggest that the citizen's forum could not have been called and that the police broke up that protest, is there?

 Gurumurthy C S said: (Apr 4, 2017) I also disagree with the answer. Here, both statements 1 and 2 are bi-directionally related. We can't say whether statement 1 and 2 are cause or effect because there is a possibility of both events may occur first.

 Utkarsh said: (Aug 27, 2017) Answer should be (d) as strike is not an unlawful act.

 Vikas Bamnath said: (Mar 8, 2018) As police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the unlawful gathering of large number of People, the citizen's forum called a general strike against the police atrocities, So Option A is correct.

 Anbarasu K said: (Aug 25, 2018) I also think that the answer is Option A only because of police lathi-charge the general forum called a strike.
