Hard work tends to physical effort.
While smart work tends to mental effort.
In short, hard work= 20% brain effort + 80% physical effort.
And smart work = 20% physical effort + 80% brain effort.

I agree with that smart work saves time and allows you to get goals faster than hard work but in the present scenario, there is much competition everywhere so only smart work might not lead you to success so I think rather than comparing both we should do hard work smartly.

Hard work is very much necessary in your life because without practice hardly you can not be able to do that smart work.
So, I think both terms are very much meaningful in our carrier and both terms are a backbone of each other.

I think smart work is a by-product of hard work. When you work hard for a project (suppose on Java) then the next project on java will not require much hard work.

Hard work is when you don't have the tools, resources and time to complete a task well. Smart work is having a plan and the equipment/skills necessary to be successful. It is comfortable, natural to you.

Hard work is putting in as many efforts as you can to get the desired results whereas smart work is doing the same things involving lesser efforts but yielding same results. Let me illustrate it with an example.
If you are asked to draw a chair. Some of you may use your physical strength to bring it up but a few of you will use the wheels available to drag it to the position without putting in the much efforts. Former is the hard work. And latter is the smart work.
