The main difference is to spend much time for a task, or to complete a work is hardwork which is not wrong. But smart work is to complete the work in a tricky, simple and easy way.

Hard work is where people put a lot of effort and time to complete the work in a given particular time whereas smart work is where people use the effort at the right point of time.

Doing the same thing again and again with no change in the technique is hard work.

Smart work is to use some better technique for doing the same task in minimal time and efforts.
