I think, Hard work is done against the conditions whereas Smart work can be done by doing conditions in favour of work.

For example, if we want to extract out water from a well- Against the gravity is hard work whereas with the help of pulley is smart work.

I think there is no difference between hard work and smart work, rather I would say smart work is the extension of hard work as hard work gives you experience and smart work comes from experience. So untill, you have the experience you cannot work smartly.

The relationship is of superset and subset. Where hardwork is the superset and smartwork is a subset. One who is a smart worker is a hardworker too. But not every hardworker is a smartworker. Smartness can be achieved through experience after hardworking.
