Hard work and smart work both connect to work but when we work by physical efforts then it called hard work and when we work by mental intelligence in short time then it called smart work.

Hard work means doing things for a long time without any breaks and shortcuts while smart work means doing things using logics and shortcuts.
Also, I think SMART WORK come from HARD WORK.
So, if we will work hard, we will understand all the things and can do the work smartly.

Hard work is effort-oriented whereas smart work is result oriented. You'll learn a lot from hard work because you'll face failures.

In order to get an experience. I had to do hard work. But once I got experience I will turn to smart work. Without hard work we can't go to smart work. Based on situation whatever we need.
