Hard working is simply working hard and not finding or executing any easier techniques or methods to do them in an easier way. People who work hard spend most of their time in doing a particular work only.

Smart worker those who execute their plans in a smarter way and deal with situations in a smarter way.

Hard work is basically when extra efforts are put into achieving something. But on the other hand, smart work is accomplishing something by tackling things intelligently and a bit of effort.

Smart work proves to be much more efficient, especially in today's context when the world is moving faster than ever.

We have to work hard to work smart, because without working hard, one won't get the chance to work smart.

Working smart without working hard means that one don't want to sharpen his skills. Working hard and not getting success is worthless and working smart without getting the skills developed is worthless.

I think the difference is,

When the person is new to the work. He doesn't know the easy methodology to get the work done so he works hard. As time flies away he gets some experience to do that job and he finds the shortcut to the same work. That is Smart work.

I think hard work is the mother of Smart work.

Hard work gives experience and takes a long time to get success.
Smart work comes from experience and takes a short time for success.

Hard work means putting in a lot of time and effort doing a certain amount of work. Whereas, smart work means spending less amount of time performing the same amount of work.

We can study in a specified period of time if hard work is combined with commitment and effort. Here, success is a given. However, in smart work, one can achieve success by thinking smartly because success is measured by careful preparation, innovative thinking, expertise, and effort, among other factors.
