The MBA is a great tool to round out your academic background. It can lift you up from the narrow view of your discipline, whether it is engineering/science, sales, HR or accounting, and give you a better overall view of the business world. A good MBA program can do two things. First, it can expose you to courses and skills that are outside your current core functions. While you may never actually use all of those skills, they will provide you with an understanding of what people actually do throughout your organization. If you are an engineer, for example, you might appreciate marketing more. If you are in HR, you will have a better understanding of what supply chain issues are in today's business world. This broadening of your background will, just by itself, help you do your job better.

Now whenever I m seeing surrounding I'm seeing only two one is MBA other is engineers. This two things are very overrated like a hell. & this happening because earlier 5 years back people in India more we're enthusiastic doing engineering because all of us were thinking that engineers have more scope & more money into it.

As time passed automatically quantity started getting increase & because of that more who are not liable for it has got into as failure because not getting good salary, no more scope in job environment. After that not getting in their they started taking ride of MBA boat where most got hallucinated thinking this will give more job prospects & better job life but things won't end here.

People in India are major problem we follow what others are doing we are not seeing what is important to us & what is not, in which thinks we are perfect & which are not. MBA is a good platform no doubt in it it can be good when someone is learning management skills, engrossing more into management subject, improvising their own skills. Rather than focusing on placement & more giving emphasis on money. Eventually person who has a talent & is intelligent is one who is able to break the code of success.

Over rated in India by this term we understand that more and more Indians are aspiring Or giving value to MBA than it is actually worth for. To some extent it is true now, as most of the students are now pursuing it as a means to get into lucrative job rather then thinking how he or she can upgrade her skills through MBA and contribute to generate value. There is also another myth prevailing about top 20 B school is that if a student is from there that means it guaranteed high value creation, we have seen so many successful people not a MBA yet generate higher value than students from top tier school. To keep it short follow your passion not a degree to be successful and that's how you can live your dream job.

Yes MBA is overrated, but overrated because of whom? The money minded universities? No, it's solely and wholly because of the money minded students and future employees. Even my own friends are seeking an admission into the prestigious IIMs in India with their deadly preparations for the CAT. So when I ask them the motive, all they have to say is, "High package, I can own my own helicopter (a fantasy as of now, and in a lighter vein though) , and most importantly my hourly salary in dollars. Goldman sachs my dream company".

Do you see the shallow depth of knowledge they possess about what is MBA actually? And when you ask them why they prefer MBA, they seek asylum by saying "I don't like to sit in front of a computer and spoil my life all day", as if being an MBA graduate allows you to sleep a good 9 hours a day.

So I request all our job seekers to look for other factors like transportation, working environment, time you can spend with your family and friends, journey length and time etc when you think of a "dream" job. Let our dreams not be constrained to only money. As a famous quote says, "Money cannot buy everything" :).

All the best everyone !

Hello Friends,

MBA is no doubt highly overrated in the whole globe due to its value, everybody know that the scope of MBA is increasing by leaps and bounds. If we focus for a while on the newspapers, every company and every bank or every other organization prefer MBA because MBA holders can solve every type of complex problems at the time, they are good decision makers and they can work under pressure. MBA Degree is more preferred over Engineering Degree now-a-days.

I think getting an MBA surely boosts one's career. It depends on a lot of factors like your interests, preferences and the demand in the industry. What usually people look at while doing an MBA is just the attractive package. Your aim should be to learn Management techniques. Though a heavy package does hold importance, but you must ensure that you do your legwork after you are done with your MBA and even look out for Jobs during the course.

I agree with @Vishu. People want to do MBA just because of the attractive package it offers.

Frankly speaking it depends on the individual whether to do MBA or not. Working in an `industry where you enjoy doing work can also give you a modest package after some time obviously not equal to MBA. But then at least you are enjoying your work and have your personal life as well.

What I have always heard is post MBA life is difficult, although it pays you well yet there is a lot of job stress and long working hours.

A place where you enjoy doing work and love the skills involved in it is much better than doing MBA just for the sake of money.

MBA is only overrated for the people who follow the crowd. MBA is a good option for those who are genuinely interested in it, not because they want money but they enjoy doing that work.

Having a good stress free life with a modest package where you can contribute towards the society by any means is the perfect place to work in.

Follow your heart and not the crowd :).

Yes I am completely agree with that statement that MBA is highly overrated in India and it has a reason too. As we see in India the unemployment is increasing rapidly and people think that by doing MBA they got the job easily. As we see that MBA's are not only from commerce stream but also from science and arts too.

So they are just following the crowd without even knowing the mean of MBA.

So yes MBA is highly overrated inn India.

Yes I really think that MBA's are overrated in India as in today's scenario we can see that field of MBA is attracting most of the youth irrespective of their capabilities to perform like an MBA. This may be due to the reason that this course offers opportunities to meet different people and secondly most important that it offers high packages. We see MBA's not only from commerce background but from science, arts too.

They don't know the real role of MBA. India being a developing economy, with huge market potential and career opportunities booming, there is definitely high demand for MBA graduates, but MBA is not for everybody. Moreover adding to it if someone wants to do job in Indian economy, he should prefer MBA from top 20 institutes in India or from Abroad as most of the business tycoons like Anil Ambani, Rattan Tata, and our prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, all got their studies from abroad.

These private small Indian institutes are all money minded. They don't try to polish your abilities, your talents, moreover they don't have any good infrastructure. All they want is to fill their pockets and run their institutes. In my opinion we need both management education and also the practical things for business, because we get the knowledge from both as these need for great success in business. At the end note, I want to say that a person should know that MBA means Master of Business Administration and should work accordingly.

Ya MBA is over rated in India many of student do MBA after completion of their degree, because their are many industries in India, student choose MBA because you get two things from here 1) popularity, that mean you get chance to meet new peoples, 2) money, so here all categories of student wants to do MBA, like arts students, commerce student, science student, and also B-Tech student, no one should not want to what do it mean, only they want to achieve a good certificate, but according to me those do MBA in top institutes in india, then they get a good job in a top company, one thing is first needed as MBA is a business course so that present knowledge is must required as per the situation, you should understand the customers.

India is going to one of the top industrial country in near future so it is not required to go people abroad, MBA-mean master in business application so always keep your mind in that things, then you should understood the value of MBA.
