Cricket as a National Obsession is a Detriment to Other Sports

Although other sports like football, hockey, and tennis are watched by people when it is compared to cricket it has fewer viewers.

In my view, cricket has the most popular fanbase worldwide. Some of you said that other sports also have the same popularity but it wasn't. By the way, most popular sports will quickly reach the people.

Moreover, India has the most talented players and huge fan-following cricketers even like Small Child to Old Man.

Everyone loves that sport with passion. I love cricket because there's an emotion expressed in the field that will appear on the field and off the field also.

Cricket is not just a game for us; it's more like an event or a tournament, like the World Cup, and franchise cricket feels like a festival. People waited the whole year for these, and especially waited for 5 years for the World Cup.

In my opinion, People of all ages get too involved in this sport.

Famous players like Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni inspire millions through their hard work, leadership, and dedication. Cricket also teaches important life lessons such as confidence, cooperation, and handling pressure, which makes it more than just a sport.

While modern cricket has become faster and more commercial, the true spirit of the game still lies in sportsmanship and dedication. Cricket and football both have their own separate fanbase and favoritism, but I believe that giving too much priority to cricket is somehow causing people to ignore other important issues of our country like politics, economy, culture, education, and national development.

IPL and T20 are good for entertainment and relaxation, but at the same time they can divert people’s attention, thinking, and motivation from the real goal of building a “Viksit Bharat”. Sports definitely help the country, but mostly the people who are playing, investing, betting, or making business through them get the benefit. If we look at other sports, many talented athletes who represent India at national and international levels, win Olympic medals, and make the country proud still do not receive the same recognition, support, or respect as famous cricketers like Virat Kohli or MS Dhoni. Not only ordinary citizens but even the government and media sometimes fail to reward them the way they truly deserve. Many people do not even know the names of athletes from sports like wrestling, hockey, athletics, boxing, or archery despite their achievements for the nation.

However, after 2024, women’s cricket started receiving more fame and appreciation, which is a positive change for Indian sports.

But a developed or developing country should not focus only on one sport but should support every athlete equally and encourage awareness, talent, discipline, and national growth together.
