Hi everyone,
I feel that its a bit of overstatement that, cricket as a national obsession is a detriment to other sports.
We support many other games like tennis, badminton, shooting, etc. These games also have their own sheen and fame. We have sports stars like Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal, Bopppana, Mahesh Bhupati, Leander Paes, Rajwardhan Singh Rathore, Abhinav Bindra other than our cricketers.
So many sports are also popular in India other than cricket also.

I fell this figure is running out. Because. As we see that in recent completed commonwealth games play. Its overall great display from all our athletes. As they brought lot of laurels to the country by achieving various top positions as in their respective categories. As we can see a poll of young talents emerging from that sports extravaganza. Other than cricket. As we started to hear a lot about saina nehwal, leander paes, somedev, sania, and lot of others. They are not part of the cricket. But still they could reach out to of million Indian hearts. Through their matured performance.
So I think the scenario here is changing. As because of the talents emerging from every other sport.

What I feel is that. In India it can be a detriment. As we see. Very less people are watching the common wealth games. Because in India people like cricket more than the national game hockey. If we cannot give respect to the national game. Then you know what would be the symptoms. While in other countries, cricket is a normal game. So I think only in India this is possible.

Have to agree to Khilar. Cricket is killing other games. How many athletes, tennis players, boxers or footballers do we all know. Just a handful isn't it. Now ask anyone on the road for india's cricket team ODI squad contingents. Give it a shot. One Sania Nehwal or one Dhanraj Pillai does not change the sorry state of other sports in India.
Look at football for instance, having a population of over 100 crores cant we produce a squad for the football world cup.

In India Indian Cricket Team is recognised as a no.1 Test team in all over the world. In 1983 India got World Cup.In other games India could not have gain this kind of fame.So many corporate company like to invest too much money to organised this game.So in India Cricket become very popular.
But ofcourse for this the players from other game become less interest on their game, which become a a reason that they are defeating in their games.

WEll its a fact that cricket has been overshadowing all other sports exercised in our country. The performance of the Indian cricket team has won many accolades all over the world, so its bound to happen that Indians are prejudiced about this game. But that definitely does not imply that one should go bonkers and disrespect other nationally and internationally celebrated games. Another reason to this is the over stimulated publicity and investments by all the biggies of the country in this sport. Thus, it overshadows the successes in various other fields of sports which has left many a sportsmen disheartened.

Hi Friends,.
I am totally in favor of this topic because now a days parents are allow to play cricket to there children rather than other sports, are wasting there time is it right? No, absolutely no.
We have a very good player in football, basketball and many more games which have international exposure but no one accept that games as there career, this kind of games for only there personnel interest. Because player don't have that much of exposure. Now a days we can see businessman are even interested to spend money in cricket we have IPL for cricket only but what about other games even government, businessman no one support for this games.
Even when cricket world is organized people started "Yagya" (worship to GOD) for Win the match, but is any kind of this thing done for any other game world-cup like hockey and all. Indian Hockey team holds the second in most powerful team of hockey but still our national game awaited for that much of exposure that cricket all ready have.
Friends all I just wanted to say that all games are equal, if our Government and population of India support us then no one can stop us to become a No. 1 in all games ans China, America even not able to compete us in any game.
Thank You for your support and paying attention on my views.

Yes, I completely agree that cricket is overshadowing other INDIAN sports. There are rarely handful players of other games which are known to us. This is all because of not encouraging other sports. Common people, government as well as bolloywood stars are just interested in cricket and supporting it too. Now cricket players are gaining money and other sports players are not.
Support other games, the most hockey, our national game.

Hi friends,
In my point of view, Cricket is not harming any other Game.
In fact, the divelopment of any sport is not the matter of money its a matter of Governance structure.
Lets take a comparision between the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games and the forthcoming
Cricket world Cup 2011 makes clear differences in the GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE of cricket and other sports in India.
The best way to drum up interest before a mega event is through the sale of Merchandise. But for Commenwealth Games, a full scale merchandise program was never launched. Which results---We lost the huge revenue earning opportunity.
In contrast, world cup merchandise is already on sale in India and elsewhere in the subcontinent.
Unfortunately for the Delhi Commonwealth Games, ticket sales and distribution were complete mess.
It is the professionalism associated with Gentelman Game called 'Cricket', evident also from the way the Eden Gardens unpreparedness issues have been handled and hard measures taken, that explans the tremendous interest in the event across sector of the Indian Economy and Society.
Comming to IPL-- There is nothing worng to put more money On the Event Where people showing more Interest.

Yes cricket detriment the other sports in India cricket is not treated as a game its treated as a religion, which is good but only upto some extent. Suppose if there is a cricket match between India and some other country then every person is affected by the result of that match but in case of other sports nothing like that is happen who won or lose its doesn't matter for us. This is totally partiality with other sports. Everybody in India knows about Sachin Tendulkar but how many amongst us know Saina Nehwal the great badminton champion.
