Peat is the first stage of carbonization. It is decomposed plant matter and thus the original plant material may be found.

Anthracite contain 95-96%, bitumen contain 50-60%, lignite contain 25-30% coal but peat contain a very few amount of coal and other volume contain a unwanted part of tree.

Because peat is the uppermost layer of coal layers, the plant matters are mostly found in it!

During carbonization that part of wood which remains in a low pressure because remained at the top most layer remains uncarbonized 1, e not properly undergoes the process of carbonization and hence the traces of wood remain in their original state.
