The peat is the uppermost layer of coal, it is a soft layer consisting of dead plants and animals. The second layer of coal is lignite it has a high moisture content and carbon content of 25%-35%.The next layer is the bitumen, which is black in colour. The best quality coal is the anthracite it has got about 85%-95% of carbon content.

Peat is formed from the Bryophyta known as Sphagnum which is an aquatic bryophyta and since bryophytes are the earlier known land plants and they form a soft black or brown depositions in damp areas where they grows and with the age they got decayed and form peat hence the Sphagnum is also known as "Peat Moss"

During carbonization that part of wood which remains in a low pressure because remained at the top most layer remains uncarbonized 1, e not properly undergoes the process of carbonization and hence the traces of wood remain in their original state.

As peat is the first level of formation of vegetable matter or remains of plants which is found in the underlying layers of earth. Because of underlying substances it creates pressure and heat result in the formation of coal after many years.

AS the peat found in the lowest depth of earth considering the other forms of coal, it also have lowest percentage of coal comparing other forms. in other words we can say that they are the yougest fossils

Peat under goes less carbonisation as compared ton other types of coal. It contains about 27-40% of carbon content. And due to less pressure & temp effects on plant orign it is visible in peat.

Anthracite (hard coal) contain 92-98% carbon.
Bituminous (house hold coal) contain 60-80% carbon.
Lignite (soft coal) contain 30-40% carbon.
Peat - this is the most inferior quality of coal.

Anthracite contain 95-96%, bitumen contain 50-60%, lignite contain 25-30% coal but peat contain a very few amount of coal and other volume contain a unwanted part of tree.

Order of quality of coal:.

Peat, lignite, bitumen, anthracite (best coal as most carbon content due to its long duration under suppression).

Because peat is the initial stage of the formation of coal so obviously peat can contain recognizable traces of plants and any dead remains.
