First things it is not Polythene it is Polyethylene.

Poly = many, mer = unit, Polymer = Many units,
Mono = single or One, Monomer = single unit,
Polyethylene = Polymer.
Ethylene = Monomer, So Monomer of Polyethylene is ethylene.

Ex, Monomer of Polypropylene is Propylene.

(-CH2=CH2-)n --> (-CH2-CH2-)n
Ethylene --> Polythene

Yes you are correct.

Ethylene polymerises to give polyethylene or polythene.

Actually monomer of polythene is ethene right?

Dnyaneshwar said:   1 decade ago
Because polythene is prepared from ethylene.

Because Polymers are formed from joining together of monomers. Therefore, many molecules of ethylene will form polythene.

No.of monomers are called polymers. So ethylene monomers are called polythene.

Ethylene is the Monomer. The reaction is in the following way.

Polymerization.
CH2=CH2 ------------------> (--CH2-CH2--)n
Monomer Polymer.
