In this system, carbon dioxide (CO2) combines with water to form carbonic acid (H2CO3), which in turn rapidly dissociates to form hydrogen ions and bicarbonate (HCO3- ). The carbon dioxide - carbonic acid equilibrium is catalyzed by the enzyme carbonic anhydrase; the carbonic acid - bicarbonate equilibrium is simple proton dissociation/association and needs no catalyst.

The human blood pH contain 5.7 in acidic condition for maintained by the presence of air in H2Co3-HCo3 as act as buffer of the maintain the pH of the human body system.

H2CO3 get decompose to HCO3- + H+..
hence the main buffer system of the body is H2CO3 and HCO3

H2co3-Hco3 are to maintain pH due to it stabalies the acid.

The acid is always high in the bodywhich is nutralise by bicarbonate.
