Potential energy means the energy which we can get without any motion device.

Kinetic energy means the energy which we can get from any motion.
Eg: wind energy, moving water energy for making electricity etc.

So battery provides energy without any motion i.e. static.

So it potential energy.

We use solar cell to get electricity from sun rays, which was an source but in case of battery it remains static

The energy which can be stored is called "Potential Energy". Hence Battery is the source of potential energy.
