When the channel is n-type then gate must be p-type and zero or negative voltage is applied to gate in order to flow current. Because when a positive voltage is applied then electrons from the channel are attracted towards gate by this voltage and hence the width of the channel is reduced.

Gate is used to apply the external supply to the JFET the main supply is apply then channel JFET was n type and external supply is apply p-type.

The gate lead is connected to the p-type terminals, while the drain and source leads are connected to either ends of the N-type channel.
