1. Peak inverse voltage of germanium is less than silicon hence si gives better operable range.
2. E.g of ge is less than si hence si gives better operable range.
3. Secondary reason : Abundant raw material is available for si.

Silicon has less leakage current. So si is preferred.

In silicon its valence electrons are closely bound to the nucleus. But in germanium valence electrons are too far away from nucleus and they are loosely bound. So si (14) and ge (32).

Silicon has energy gap of 0.7 eV and that of germanium has 0.3 eV. So it possible for germanium to jump electrons from valence band to the conduction band at nearly about room temperature. Hence get uncertain in its conduction. Thus silicon use most.

Silicon have band gap 0.7 with compare to germanium 0.3 so that its more stable than germanium.

Silicon is easily available and cheap compare to germanium.

Silicon is mostly used. Germanium is very costly.

Silicon is used mostly because of its presence in abundance.
