All the previous year data must be taken into account for the calculation of the number of the employees present in 1999 because the amount 120 (224 - 120 = 120) is only the effective increase of employees in that year. The question asked for the employees present in 1999, not for an effective increase in employees in 1999.

The answer is correct because he asked that total no of working persons in the office it means that the new members may be added but some of the old employees may be there. So the answer is correct.

Why the data of the year 1999 is considered. At the start of 1999, the data upto the year 1998 will come into effect.

The language of the question is incorrect and the solution will.

No of peons working in 1999 = 224 - 120.

= 104.

In this question you are asking only for 1999 year only then why have you taken all years to solving the problem?

It's not correct. How are you telling it's correct you are telling 1999 only then why are you taking all years?

Instead of "in the year" it should be "till the year"... I think. Then the question will be accurate.

Any shortcut to solve this type of questions. Not to add up lengthy numbers.
