If it is known that at least 23 students were eligible for a Symposium on Chemistry, then the minimum qualifying marks in Chemistry for eligibility to Symposium would lie in the range?
40-45
30-40
20-30
Below 20
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Since 66 students get 20 and above marks in Chemistry and out of these 21 students get 30 and above marks, therefore to select top 35 students in Chemistry, the qualifying marks should lie in the range 20-30.

@All.

Guys all of you must listen carefully in the question that is they are asking "minimum qualifying marks" to select "at least 23 students". So we must go from the lowest marks.

Below 20 is 100-87=19<23.
10 to 20 is not an option so neglect that.
20 to 30 is 66-21=45>23.
So the answer is the 20-30 range.

I hope you all clear.

@Everyone.

We have to select 23 students (eligible students). So for that 21, we can select from 30 and above range and for selecting 2 more students we need to select 2 students from 20-30 range.

So 20-30 range is the correct option.

In 21, 4 also includes which mean a student who obtained marks greater than 30-40 are 17 but above 30 it is 21 means in 21 4 students are above 40 or equal to 4.
So, 21 students select from 30-40 range and rest of 2 students are selected from 20 -30 range.

@All.

They asked the range in which the Qualifying Marks lie which qualifies 23 students for Symposium. 30 & above has 21 students which means, if 30 was qualifying marks for symposium then only 21 students would be eligible. But the number of students eligible is 23.20 & above has 66 students which means, somewhere in 20-30 range lies our Qualifying Marks which makes 23 students eligible for the Symposium. No one knows the exact marks, it could be anywhere between 20-30.

Hope this clears your doubts.

I am not understanding this.
If they say "AT LEAST" 23 students were eligible, that means that it could have been 23 but it might as well have been 100 eligible students.
So, in that sense, the minimum required grade is 0 out of 50 no?

@all

Above 20 there are 66 people
Above 30 there are 21 people

So people between 20-30 would be 66-21 = 45 people

Option C is correct , no doubt in that.

Can you explain briefly, please?

Answer should be (D) as they have asked for minimum eligibility range, and question doesn't mention anything about explicitly about passing criteria so we should not assume any extra information.

Gap between 66 and 21= 45>23. So c is right.
