Study the following table and answer the questions.
Classification of 100 Students Based on the Marks Obtained by them in Physics and Chemistry in an Examination.
Subject | Marks out of 50 | ||||
40 and above | 30 and above | 20 and above | 10 and above | 0 and above | |
Physics | 9 | 32 | 80 | 92 | 100 |
Chemistry | 4 | 21 | 66 | 81 | 100 |
Average (Aggregate) | 7 | 27 | 73 | 87 | 100 |
2.
If at least 60% marks in Physics are required for pursuing higher studies in Physics, how many students will be eligible to pursue higher studies in Physics?
Answer: Option
Explanation:
We have 60% of 50 = | ![]() |
60 | x 50 | ![]() |
= 30. |

Why people of 40 and above are not qualified ?

30 marks and above include 40 marks and above, and we don't know how many of students who got 30 marks and above, also have 40 and above, so we can only find least number of people eligible so, Answer should be 32.

I am not understand how you take 60% of 50?

@Amruta.
Total mark given is 50.
As we have to calculate percentage, we have to convert it to 100.
Students having at least 60% are eligible for higher studies.
i.e. 60/100=30/50.
i.e. Students who got at least 30 marks in physics are eligible to perform higher studies.
Look at the table for number of students who got 30 and above in physics.
Clearly the answer is 32.

Friends please just think what is given main point is that 30 and above means included all the students got marks more than 40 also.
So answer is 100% correct there is no doubt.

First of all I got the doubt that, why 40 and above were not included in the answer but later I came to know by above comments that, they were already included in 30 and above.
So, if that's true then whats the need to add 40 and above column in the table.

As minimum qualify marks is 30 so we can take 30 and above as well 40 and above. Why is taken only 30 and above? Please reply.

I am too confused on this question. When all the categories are defined separately 30 and above includes 30 to 39 and 40 and above includes 40 to 50. So, How can anyone say 40 and above students are included in 30 and above Column?
