September 21 is observed as the International Day of Peace, promoting peace, non-violence and cooperation among societies. The United Nations General Assembly first declared the observance in 1981. In 2001, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution designating September 21 as a day for non-violence and ceasefire. The date also marks the beginning of the regular session of the UN General Assembly. In 2026, the theme is “Invest in Peace – For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day,” emphasising that peace-building is a continuous responsibility involving individuals, communities and organisations.
