The United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is observed every year on June 26 to reaffirm the global commitment to eliminating torture and supporting its victims. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the observance through Resolution 52/149 in 1997, and it was first observed in 1998. The date marks the entry into force of the UN Convention Against Torture (CAT) in 1987. The observance promotes human dignity, justice, rehabilitation for survivors, accountability for perpetrators, and stronger international cooperation to prevent torture and uphold human rights worldwide.
