August 20 is observed annually as World Mosquito Day to raise awareness about mosquito-borne diseases and their prevention. The day commemorates the important discovery made by British-Indian physician and scientist Sir Ronald Ross in 1897, when he demonstrated that malaria is transmitted through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. World Mosquito Day highlights the health risks associated with diseases such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, and Zika virus. It also encourages communities to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, avoid stagnant water, use protective measures, and cooperate with public health agencies to reduce mosquito-borne disease transmission.

August 14 is observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, also known as Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas. The Government of India declared August 14 as the day of remembrance in 2021 to honour the victims and survivors of the Partition of India in 1947. The observance recalls the immense human suffering caused by displacement, communal violence, loss of property, family separation, and destruction of livelihoods. The date precedes India’s Independence Day and highlights the sacrifices and hardships associated with Partition. Various exhibitions, memorial programmes, educational sessions, and discussions are held to preserve historical memories and promote communal harmony.

August 13 is observed every year as World Organ Donation Day to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation and encourage people to become donors. The day also aims to dispel myths and misconceptions related to organ transplantation. Organ donation can provide a second chance at life to patients suffering from organ failure. Organs such as the kidneys, heart, liver, lungs, pancreas, and intestines can be donated under appropriate medical and legal conditions. Awareness campaigns help bridge the gap between the growing demand for organs and the availability of donated organs.

August 12 is observed annually as World Elephant Day to promote the conservation, protection and welfare of elephants worldwide. The observance focuses on threats faced by African and Asian elephants, including habitat loss, poaching, illegal ivory trade, human-elephant conflicts and exploitation in captivity. The official celebration of World Elephant Day began on August 12, 2012, following an initiative launched in 2011 by the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation and filmmakers Patricia Sims and Michael Clark. In 2026, the day falls on Wednesday and carries the message “Bringing the world together to help elephants,” emphasising global cooperation for elephant conservation.

In 2026, the observance falls on Wednesday, August 12, under the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” highlighting diverse youth experiences while emphasising their shared aspirations for education, employment, healthcare, inclusion and participation in decision-making.
