August 27 is observed annually as World Lake Day to raise awareness about the importance of lakes and the need for their conservation, restoration, and sustainable management. The date commemorates the first World Lake Conference held on August 27, 1984, in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. The United Nations General Assembly established World Lake Day through Resolution 79/142, adopted by consensus on December 12, 2024. The first global observance took place on August 27, 2025, making August 27, 2026, the second United Nations observance. The day highlights freshwater security, biodiversity, livelihoods, and environmental protection.

August 23 is observed as National Space Day in India to commemorate the historic soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon on August 23, 2023. The Vikram lander successfully landed near the lunar south polar region, making India the first country to achieve a successful landing in that region and the fourth country to accomplish a soft landing on the Moon. National Space Day celebrates India’s achievements in space science and aims to inspire students, researchers, innovators, startups, and young entrepreneurs to contribute to the country’s growing space sector. The 2026 theme focuses on innovation, collaboration, and global space leadership.

August 22 is observed as Madras Day, commemorating the founding of Madras in 1639, when the English East India Company secured land at Madraspatnam. Although historical records contain some uncertainty between July 22 and August 22 regarding the date of the original deed, August 22 has been traditionally celebrated as Madras Day. The first official Madras Day celebration was held in 2004, and the occasion highlights Chennai’s transformation from a trading settlement into a major cultural, economic, educational, and urban centre. Madras was officially renamed Chennai in 1996.

August 20 is observed annually as Indian Akshay Urja Day, also known as Renewable Energy Day, in India. The day aims to raise awareness about renewable and sustainable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, biomass, and geothermal energy. It also emphasises energy conservation, advancements in renewable-energy technologies, and greater public participation in India’s transition toward clean energy. The date is additionally significant because it marks the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was associated with efforts to promote modernisation, science, and technology in India. The observance highlights the importance of clean energy for sustainable development and addressing climate change.

August 19 is observed globally as World Humanitarian Day (WHD) to honour humanitarian workers and promote the protection of aid personnel under International Humanitarian Law (IHL). The day commemorates the August 19, 2003 suicide truck bombing at the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, which targeted the United Nations headquarters and killed 22 humanitarian workers. The United Nations General Assembly designated the observance through Resolution A/RES/63/139, adopted on December 11, 2008. The first official World Humanitarian Day was observed on August 19, 2009. The 2026 campaign uses the official slogan #ActForHumanity.
