Ladakh launched India’s first high-altitude wildlife safari in 2026 using six specially modified open-back vehicles. The pilot project will initially operate in Rumbak, Shang and Uley, which are known for snow leopard habitats and wildlife tourism. The initiative aims to promote sustainable tourism, prevent illegal off-roading, protect fragile high-altitude ecosystems and create livelihood opportunities for local communities. Local drivers and trained wildlife guides will accompany visitors along designated routes. According to the Snow Leopard Population Assessment in India (SPAI), Ladakh had an estimated 477 snow leopards out of the national population of 718, highlighting its importance for snow leopard conservation.
