China became the first country to complete a full life-cycle, or seed-to-seed, harvest of rice in a microgravity environment aboard the Tiangong Space Station. The achievement was completed by astronauts of the Shenzhou-23 mission on August 5, 2026, at an orbital altitude of about 400 kilometres above Earth. The experiment used specialised plant growth chambers to regulate light, temperature, humidity and nutrient delivery. The research aims to support sustainable food production during future long-duration human missions to the Moon and Mars, while also studying the genetic stability and regeneration capabilities of crops grown in microgravity.

Tamil Nadu launched the Vetri Vaanmagal Scheme on August 6, 2026, as part of its 2026-27 agriculture budget to promote women’s participation in modern agricultural technology. The scheme aims to train 500 eligible candidates, including 100 women drone operators, through the Remote Pilot Training Organisation of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU). The government allocated ₹1.50 crore for operator training and pilot licences. Additionally, 50 women will receive financial assistance covering 50% of the cost of agricultural drones, supported by a ₹2.50 crore allocation. The initiative focuses on precision farming and strengthening women’s role in agricultural mechanisation.

IIT Bombay Associate Professor Karthikeyan Lanka was selected for the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) Young Scientist Platinum Jubilee Award 2026 in the Earth Sciences category. His research focuses on ecohydrology, satellite remote sensing and land-atmosphere interactions. He has used data from NASA’s Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission to study soil moisture and its influence on the Indian monsoon. Lanka also developed India’s first operational subseasonal agricultural drought forecasting system in collaboration with the Mahalanobis National Crop Forecast Centre. The system provides weekly drought forecasts at a 9-kilometre spatial resolution with lead times of up to four weeks.

Gujarat and Rajasthan were covered by the deployment of the National Joint Outbreak Response Team (NJORT) on August 5, 2026, to manage the Chandipura Virus (CHPV) outbreak. The multidisciplinary team includes experts from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD). Investigations are focusing on possible vectors, the clinical spectrum of the disease, animal reservoirs and genetic variations of the virus. Whole-genome sequencing of samples is being conducted at the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre in Gandhinagar to identify genetic changes in the circulating virus.

August 9 is observed every year as Nagasaki Day to commemorate the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in 1945 during the final stages of World War II. On August 9, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb code-named “Fat Man” on Nagasaki. The bomb was carried by the B-29 Bockscar, piloted by Major Charles W. Sweeney, and exploded at approximately 11:02 a.m. The bombing caused widespread destruction, deaths, injuries and long-term radiation effects. Nagasaki Day honours the victims, recognises the suffering of survivors, and promotes awareness about the devastating humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons and the importance of nuclear disarmament.

Arunachal Pradesh will host the Asian Rafting Championships 2026 in Boleng from October 5 to 9, 2026. The five-day championship will be held on the Simang River, a major tributary of the Siang River, and will feature leading paddlers from across Asia. The event is intended to showcase Arunachal Pradesh’s potential for white-water sports and adventure tourism. The Siang is a major river of the state and is known as the Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet. Arunachal Pradesh, known as the “Land of the Rising Sun,” became a full-fledged state on February 20, 1987, and its capital is Itanagar.

Andhra Pradesh announced a development plan on August 6, 2026, to attract ₹9.3 lakh crore in total investment through the Visakhapatnam Economic Region (VER) project. The state government is expected to contribute ₹3.5 lakh crore to ₹4 lakh crore, while the private sector target is ₹5.3 lakh crore. The ‘Bay City’ project will serve as the primary anchor for regional development. The project extends from Mulapeta Port to the Akhanda Godavari project in Rajahmundry and focuses on AI data centres, hydrogen, clean technology, renewable energy, port-related industries and tourism. The initiative aims to accelerate economic growth across the region.

The 9th India Medical Device 2026 conference was organised at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on August 7 and 8, 2026. The event was organised by the Department of Pharmaceuticals in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI). Its theme was “Towards Viksit Bharat: Advancing India as a Global Hub for Quality Medical Devices”. Key technical sessions focused on Software as a Medical Device (SaMD), Artificial Intelligence in healthcare, localisation of component manufacturing and reimbursement mechanisms for innovative therapies. The conference aimed to strengthen India’s medical device sector and support the country’s goal of becoming a global hub for quality healthcare technologies.

Uttar Pradesh approved the Uttar Pradesh Private Business Park Development Scheme 2025 on March 23, 2026, with the objective of attracting global investments and reducing project implementation delays. The scheme follows a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model based on the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) framework. Developers must have a minimum land requirement of 10 acres, while 50% of the business park must be reserved for IT and knowledge-based industries. The initiative aims to provide plug-and-play infrastructure for Global Capability Centres, research and development units, and MSMEs. Land ownership will remain with the state’s Industrial Development Authorities.

August 9 is observed annually as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. The United Nations General Assembly declared the day in December 1994 to recognise the rights, cultures, traditions and contributions of Indigenous Peoples worldwide. The date also commemorates the first session of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations, held on August 9, 1982. In 2026, the theme is “Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being,” highlighting the important role of Indigenous midwives and traditional knowledge. The day promotes awareness of issues such as land rights, cultural preservation, equality, healthcare, education and protection of traditional knowledge.
