max. velocity occur at depth 0.05y to 0.15y below free surface.

mean velocity occur at an average of the velocities measured at 0.2y and 0.8y depth from the free surface.

So, the answer is nearly from 0.6y to 0.7y.

In Single point observation method: in shallow streams of depth up to 3m, the velocity measured at 0.6times the depth of flow below the water surface is taken as avg velocity.

Why not 0.5 y?

How its 0.6Y?

Can you explain how its becomes 0.6y?

See the channel section with velocity distribution.

Due to surface currents max velocity does not occur at surface max velocity occurs at 0.25y

Mean velocity at V 0.6y = (V 0.8y+V 0.6y)/2.
