Answer is C.

When the soil is loaded undrained, the pore pressure increases. As the excess pore pressure dissipates and water leaves the soil, settlement takes place. This process takes time, and the rate of settlement decreases over time. In coarse soils, a volume change occurs immediately as pore pressures are dissipated rapidly due to high permeability.

Option C is correct because it is the pore pressure which forces the soil particles in the upward direction this mean that settlement or consolidation is dependent upon pressure once the pore pressure that is you becomes zero consolidation or settlement of the clayey soil occurs. As you know expulsion of water from the soil leads to consolidation.

Both option A and C can be correct, when we talk about primary consolidation for saturated fines, here total stress is constant, so any change in pore pressure causes equal change in effective stress, but in exams option A can be more appropriate, since terzaghi made use of effective stress in deriving consolidation theory.

Correct answer is C because consolidation means expulsion of pore water pressure. If there is no pore water then consolidation will not happen if there is pore water then consolidation will occur. It has been cleared that it is the function of pore water pressure. Shear strength is the function of effective stress.

The formula is Cc(coefficient of consolidation)= k/γ*Mv where Mv os coefficient of compressibility and is inversely proportional to effective stress.

If you substitute the formula of Mv then you find the Cc is directly proportional to change in effective stress.

Consolidation of soil is happen due to expulsion of pore water. So consolidation of soil is a function of pore water pressure.

Consolidation settlement is a function of effective stress. Not the function of total stress.

Option C is right.

Compaction is the function of effective stress but consolidation is the function of pore water pressure.

I think the answer is A. Degree of consolidation is depend on pore pressure not consolidation.
