In a flight of 600 km, an aircraft was slowed down due to bad weather. Its average speed for the trip was reduced by 200 km/hr and the time of flight increased by 30 minutes. The duration of the flight is:
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Let the duration of the flight be x hours.
Then, | 600 | - | 600 | = 200 |
x | x + (1/2) |
![]() |
600 | - | 1200 | = 200 |
x | 2x + 1 |
x(2x + 1) = 3
2x2 + x - 3 = 0
(2x + 3)(x - 1) = 0
x = 1 hr. [neglecting the -ve value of x]

Let the duration of the flight be x hours.
Then, 600 - 600= 200.
x x + (1/2).
600 - 1200 = 200.
x 2x + 1.
x (2x + 1) = 3.
2x^2 + x - 3 = 0.
(2x + 3) (x - 1) = 0.
Then, x = 1 hr.
Then, 600 - 600= 200.
x x + (1/2).
600 - 1200 = 200.
x 2x + 1.
x (2x + 1) = 3.
2x^2 + x - 3 = 0.
(2x + 3) (x - 1) = 0.
Then, x = 1 hr.

This type question take more time in competitive exam so we can go through the answer to question.
If we take 1 as answer.
600/x - 600/x+1/2 = 200.
Then we substitute x = 1.
If we take 1 as answer.
600/x - 600/x+1/2 = 200.
Then we substitute x = 1.

D=600 Km,
S=200 Km/hr
Let initial speed be x.
So, new speed = x-200Km/hr
S = D/T, T=D/S.
So, T= 600/ x-200.
x-200 = 600
x = 800
T = 600/800-200 = 600/600 = 1 hour.
S=200 Km/hr
Let initial speed be x.
So, new speed = x-200Km/hr
S = D/T, T=D/S.
So, T= 600/ x-200.
x-200 = 600
x = 800
T = 600/800-200 = 600/600 = 1 hour.

2 mistakes done by you.
1. D= s*T , and you have taken d=s/t as 200 Kmph is speed.
2. How 200 kmph *200 = 1200? it should be 12000. The whole logic is wrong.

600/(x-200) - 30/60 =600/x ---> Eq.(1)
=> from equation (1) we get , x = 600.
Now, we have to find the duration of the flight = 600/x = 600/600 = 1hour. Answer.

Speed = distance/time.
Time = distance/speed.
Speed=600-200 = 400 km/hr.
Distance to cover = 600 km.
Duration required(time) = 600/400 = 3/2 hr.
3/2*60 = 60 min = 1hr.
Time = distance/speed.
Speed=600-200 = 400 km/hr.
Distance to cover = 600 km.
Duration required(time) = 600/400 = 3/2 hr.
3/2*60 = 60 min = 1hr.

@Mr. saravanagopi,
we already calculate the time as x+30 in [200(x+30)=600] right. then why did you again calculating the result as 27+30.
I don't understand...

I have a quest actually the time is x+1/2 hours after delay that's the whole duration of flight but its taken as only x now its actually x+1/2 = 1 and half hour.

Helloo kiran I have 1 doubt you say that x is in hr so 3 you taken as x/2 but we dnt't know what is x value it may be 2hr 3hr. Then how you will take 3min=x/2.
